Advocacy is about acting and speaking on behalf of another person, to stand up for them, support them, deal with the issues which affect them. The service complements, supplements, and builds strong constructive links with the various organisations already out there and this office is here specifically to provide a voice for people with learning disabilities and/or mental health issues when they need help to be heard.
We can help you to find out what your rights are, consider choices and options available, represent your views, speak to organisations, authorities, health services, and provide support attending meetings or making a complaint if necessary. One of the good things about us is that we’re independent. We have no allegiance to Government bodies or departments and the service we provide has no conflict of interest which makes it easier to speak up for someone as if we were that person.
'This is the fundamental principle behind advocacy'.
What we cannot, and should never do, is tell people what we would do in their situation, give our own views and opinions, put words in their mouth, or tell them what to say. Building confidence in people won’t succeed if you do not allow them to think, make decisions, and communicate for themselves and each time we help someone do that then we help them take another step toward being able to stand up for themselves and hopefully get to a point where they don’t need us anymore.
The Advocacy Place is the first of it’s kind in Scotland; three charitable organisations have been brought together under one roof in the hope that by giving them a co-ordinated office base from which to work they can better serve the people living within the Clackmannanshire Community. Whilst they all retain their individual identity, working in a shared environment, sharing a common cause, they raise public awareness, and ultimately enhance the lives of those they are here to help.
More detailed information about the organisations within The Advocacy Place can be found by clicking the 'Who We Are' Tab.
